Propeller Shaft Grounding
The lubricating oil film in the bearings is electrically insulating a turning propeller from the hull. As a result it creates a potential difference between the shaft and the hull. As a consequence, the ship's cathodic protection system (ICCP or galvanic anodes) won't safeguard the propeller. Electrical potentials can trigger currents in the bearings that can cause pitting corrosion. This is solved by installing a shaft earthing system.
